Buy and replace Apple AirPods individually
Important: Please make sure that the model you want to buy is compatible with your AirPods set before you buy! You can find out which model you have and need to order accordingly here: Identify your AirPods
In order for the replacement AirPod to work with your old one, the two need to be paired first. This process can take longer if they have different firmware versions because they need to be synced first.
Once you receive the replacement AirPod, here's how you can pair it with your old AirPod to connect to your Apple devices:
1. Put both AirPods into the case
2. close the case and leave it for at least 20 minutes, preferably plugged in.
3. after waiting time, open the case, press and hold the button on the back. After 3-4 seconds the front light should blink white.
4. the iPhone should now recognize the Airpods normally.
Now the challenge: Step 2 can take quite different times: 1h, 1 night. Unfortunately, this can't be controlled and just needs patience. You can't force it either.
If you mix 1st generation AirPods Pro and 2nd generation AirPods Pro, when you open the case, there would be an error message that looks like this:
The iPhone/iPad will give the same error message regardless of which side the 1st or 2nd generation AirPod Pro is on. That is, if the 1st generation AirPod Pro is on the left and the 2nd generation AirPod Pro is on the right, the error message would still display "Left 2nd generation AirPod" and "Right 1st generation AirPod", which is obviously wrong.
Basically, you cannot mix AirPods of different generations.
